In this behind-the-scenes featurette for Serenity, taken from the blu-ray, Joss Whedon introduces us to Jack Green, the Director of Photography, and discusses the importance of Green's role in creating the visual language that helps tell a story on the big screen.
The video also includes behind-the-scenes glimpses of a very focused, blood-covered and sword-wielding Summer Glau as River Tam standing in front of Joss Whedon in the scene in which River fights the Reavers near the end of the movie. Summer is seen in the pose she is infamous for, holding firmly in her hands a blood soaked battleaxe and a sword covered in blood...her enemies (watch at 0:55 of the clip).

Here's Joss Whedon comment on that scene, quoted from the Serenity Blu-ray audio commentaries.
Here we have ‘the hero shot’, and I have never used that term more literally in my life. We designed the entire set, and the entire sequence, for this moment. It has been pointed out to me, that I have a problem making fiction that doesn’t have super powered adolescent girls in it. I don’t care. I think that’s one of the sweetest things that I ever shot.
