Artist Jake Thompson wins prize at Mary Valley Art contest with portrait of Summer

Added by chrisdvanne on Jul 14, 2017 | 1 COMMENTS

Artist Jake Thompson's portrait of Summer in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles - based on Cameron's iconic poster - won the first prize in the Novice section at the 17th Mary Valley Art Festival in Imbil, Queensland, Australia.

Jake impressed the judges with the fluency of his execution in the artwork titled “Under Construction”. The judges said the subject of the figure and machine was “quite compelling”.

Find below the photo of Jake's masterpiece and a photo of him posing in front of his framed artwork at the Mary Valley Art Festival. In addition, Jake kindly agreed to tell us a bit more about himself and the making of this awesome drawing.

I have spent the past ten years developing my portrait skills, creating a portfolio of both traditional and digital art. My work has been displayed in galleries across Australia and housed in private collections in Melbourne, Canberra and London. I currently practice out of my studio in Bundaberg, Queensland.

The Summer Glau/Terminator artwork was created over thirty hours (half of that on the metal alone) with mechanical graphite pencils. The intention was to have Summer sign it at a comic book convention, but when she was unable to attend, I had it framed and entered it into the Mary Valley Art contest where it took out first prize in the novice section.  Despite the six hour round trip after work it was a fantastic night :) can't wait to go back next year.

And if I have another chance to meet her, I’ll definitely be asking for that signature!

I invite you to discover Jake's work by visiting his Instagram account @artofapollo or his official website that will be coming online in a few days, jakethompson.art.

As an aside, I'm always glad when talented artists think Summer's character in Terminator : The Sarah Connor Chronicles is interesting (even if only visually) enough to create artwork based on it. This also applies to the other characters she played on the small and big screen, of course.

Not bad, would have been more impressed if he didn't just copy a promo shot though.
