TNT Cancels "Mob City"

It was an interesting experiment, but the accelerated, limited series approach to TNT"s Mob City ultimately didn"t work out.

TNT has canceled Mob City, its low-rated noir drama from The Walking Dead TV series creator Frank Darabont. The six-episode limited series aired in December and just never found a proper foothold, struggling to find viewership at a time of the year in which not a whole lot of people were watching TV.

"Mob City was created as a three-week television event and we are incredibly proud of the six hours we presented of this remarkable drama, "a TNT spokesperson said. "Although the ratings of the limited series haven"t warranted more hours we are eager to work with Frank Darabont again and were delighted to bring the vibrant world of Mob City to life."

Sounds like a rejection letter from a book publisher. Of course, given the expense of the series relative to its performance, this decision makes an unfortunate amount of practical sense.

"Ravenswood" Cancelled

ABC Family has chopped Ravenswood.

The cable network has opted not to renew the Pretty Little Liars spinoff after one season.

The 10-episode debut season struggled in the ratings, especially when denied a PLL lead-in, and the final episode aired earlier this month. The show followed five strangers whose lives become intertwined by a deadly curse.

John Wesley Shipp, who played Barry Allen/The Flash in CBS' 1990s series "The Flash," has been cast in The CW's upcoming Flash series and Arrow spinoff. Shipp will guest star in the pilot in a mystery role. If The Flash is ordered to series, Shipp’s character will likely recur. Source: THR

While we don't know which character Shipp will play, he could play Barry Allen's (played by Grant Gustin) imprisoned dad. It has become a tradition to see former actors from originals series to play in the new version. Think about The CW's Smalville for example:

Annette O'Toole played Lana Lang in "Superman III" and Martha Kent on "Smallville."

Terence Stamp played Zod in the first two films but Jor-El on "Smallville."

And of course Christopher Reeve played Superman on film and Dr. Swann on the show.

Channel 5 Moves "Helix" To Sister Channel 5*

Channel 5 is making some changes to their schedule. The free-to-air broadcaster"s latest US import Helix is now going on a mid-season break and when it returns for the final seven episodes of its 13 episode first season it will be moving to C5"s digi-net 5*.

The decision to go on a hiatus and move the programme to 5* comes after Helix has been suffering from dwindling ratings. Initially premiering to just under 1.1 million viewers - a decent number for the 10 pm slot - Helix has been shedding viewers ever since, with more recent episode sinking to the 500K mark.

So apparently premiering a new show with no promo budget and no lead-in against the Olympics does not yield high ratings? Who could have guessed?

The CW - Star Crossed

On The CW, the premiere of Star Crossed earned a 0.4 adults 18-49 rating, down 50 percent from a 0.8 for the premiere of the CW’s other sci-fi teen show, The Tomorrow People but up 25 percent from Hart Of Dixie’s 0.3 in the time period last week.

Fox"s "Batman" Prequel Casts Jada Pinkett Smith

Fox"s Batman prequel Gotham has signed Jada Pinkett Smith to its cast, but you"ll literally never guess who she"s playing.

Catwoman? Harley Quinn? A gender twist on The Riddler or Joker, perhaps?

We"re told Mrs. Will Smith will play ---

"Fish Mooney"

That name should leave even die-hard DC Comics fans scratching their heads. In the show, Fish is "a sadistic gangster boss and nightclub owner, she"s got the street smarts and almost extra-sensory abilities to read people like an open book. Imposing and hotheaded, she"s not one to be crossed." Fish Mooney also the boss of a young psycho named Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor), who eventually becomes The Penguin (and we all know what penguins eat --- right?).

The casting marks The Matrix Reloaded and Revolution"s actress return to TV following the axing of her 2009 medical drama TNT series Hawthorne.

Sources close to the production say Fish is likely an entirely original character. But since all the other characters cast so far in Gotham have been names from the sprawling Batman canon, and since this is a prequel tale, there"s always the possibility Fish will evolve into somebody more familiar.

Jennifer Lopez Cop Drama Gets NBC Series Order

American Idol"s Jennifer Lopez is going to play an undercover cop on NBC.

The network has given a straight-to-series order to the drama Shades of Blue starring Lopez as a single mother and detective recruited to work undercover for the FBI"s anti-corruption task force.

The 13-episode order is from writer Adi Hasak (3 Days to Kill), who executive produces with Lopez and her fellow Idol colleague Ryan Seacrest, along with Nina Wass, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, and Benny Medina.

Her character, Harlee McCord, is further described as "part of a close-knit unit known for its conviction record. Harlee has become compromised by her colleagues - all of whom also pitch in to help her raise her daughter - and finds herself faced with the moral dilemma of working against her cop brothers in order to redeem herself."

Almost Human May Be On The Verge Of Cancellation

Well here"s a bit of bad news. If prognostications by industry insiders are correct, one of our most promising new genre shows could be on the chopping block. According to people who have made a livelihood out of predicting such things, Almost Human, Fox"s sci-fi police procedural could be facing cancellation at the end of this, Its first season.

In a recent article tracking the most current ratings data, TV By The Numbers has classified the latest endeavor from creators J. J. Abrams and J. H. Wyman as "likely to be cancelled" While the ratings haven"t been particularly awful, the show, which the network put a lot of hype behind, hasn"t lit the world on fire either.

The article also cites a number of other factors that could play into cancellation. The network ordered 13 episodes, but, at the present time, hasn"t ordered any additional installments. In addition to that, the show is getting bumped from its current time slot in favor of the more highly rated Bones, moves like this have traditionally been indicators that a series in not long for this world.

Hope Davis & Margarita Levieva To Star In NBC Drama Pilot ‘Coercion’

Hope Davis and Margarita Levieva are set as the female leads opposite Gavin Stenhouse in the NBC drama pilot Coercion.

Quote
Written-directed by George Nolfi, the high-octane thriller revolves around the O’Connor family and their extremely intelligent son, Alex (Stenhouse), a decorated American war hero and newly minted CIA analyst who is a true patriot and loves his country and family. Unbeknownst to him, his father, his mother (Davis) and his sister (Levieva) are part of a dormant Russian sleeper cell that has just been reactivated. Davis’ Katya is described as your average Brooklyn mother who, under the surface, is sexy, dangerous, tough, smart and ready to do anything to protect her family. Levieva’s Natalie is also described as sexy and tough, often too smart for her own good and a bit of a wild child. All O’Connors will speak some Russian, which will come natural to Levieva, who was born and grew up in the Russian part of Soviet Union before emigrating with her family to the U.S. at age 11 when, also appropriately for the show, they settled in Brooklyn, NY

Source Deadline.

For the record, Margarite Levieva plays Beth in Knights of Badassdom.

"The Flash" Casts Barry Allen"s Mother

As The Flash pilot rushes closer to production, Deadline reports that Michelle Harrison (Hit "n Strum) will play Barry Allen"s mother Nora in The CW"s Arrow spinoff.

Michelle Harrison will play Barry Allen

As viewers saw when Grant Gustin was introduced as Barry Allen on Arrow, his mother was murdered by someone with superpowers and his father imprisoned for the crime, leading the future Flash to pursue a career as a crime scene investigator. Harrison"s role is described as "guest starring/recurring," which presumably means we"ll see Nora in a series of flashbacks, a key storytelling device on Arrow.

DC Entertainment Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns and Arrow executive producers Greg Berlanti and Andrew Kreisberg wrote the pilot, which will be directed by David Nutter.

SyFy"s "Being Human" Cancelled After Four Seasons

SyFy is calling time on the US adaptation of Being Human. The network has announced that the current season of the Muse Entertainment produced drama will be its last, with the series finale set to air on Monday April 7th.

The network said in a statement. "They"ve saved the best for last with the final six episodes that revisit the story"s beginning, leading to a not-to-be-missed send-off for Aidan, Sally, Josh and Nora."

The cancellation of the US adaptation comes more than a year after BBC Three also pulled the plug on the original series, which was created by Toby Whithouse. It also comes at a time of change at SyFy with network topper Mark Stern recently exiting and being replaced by Bill McGoldrick. SyFy, who recently renewed Haven for a supersized 26 episode fifth season, are looking to get back to "harder sci-fi" and aim to have up to six scripted series on air and are also eyeing a return to limited/event series.

It also seemed like it would be cancelled because they have the new show "Bitten" which is also about Werewolfs.
