One comment expresses my thoughts nicely:

"The whole premise feels lazy and borrowed to me, but I suppose it's always all about execution, isn't it?"

In every single sci-fi show where robots ever showed up( except one we all know very well) there was an episode( or multiple episodes) when this robots=slaves issue was brought up. Its only that they are putting in more "scary" scenes and robot sex to make it more edgier and all.

The standard story will be: robots are oppressed, nobody cares except idealist guy/gal who just everybody laughs at-> robots get emotions and become sad because they are oppressed-> robot uprising or a more peaceful version of something like that-> robots get freedom, idealist guy/gal turns into a Big Damn Hero and everybody lives happily ever after until somebody makes a spinoff where there is a conflict between the robot nation and the humans but the show will be cancelled because nobody watched it due to its inferior quality compared to the original. This is assuming the show will be highly successful.

I'm not impressed so far.

I have reported previously in the Summer Glau Wiki the news about Josh Friedman's new pilot for NBC, The Asset , a spy drama centered on a female lead.

Ali Larter (Heroes) has just landed the starring role in the pilot, says EW :

Quote
The show is described as a character-driven drama set in the CIA’s New York City station. Larter plays Anna King, a photojournalist well known for her photographs of “hot spots” around the world. But her real work is for the CIA; she is a globe-trotting “Human Intel Specialist,” working in the field under journalist cover.

Julie Benz Gets Female Lead In Syfy Series ‘Defiance’, reports Deadline.

Quote
Set on a future Earth, Defiance is set in a world where humans and aliens live together on a planet ravaged by decades of war and transformed by alien terra-forming machines. It centers on Jeb Nolan (Bowler), the law-keeper in a bustling frontier boomtown that is one of the new world’s few oasis of civility and inclusion.

Former ABC's "No Ordinary Family" star will play Amanda Rosewater, the idealistic newly appointed mayor of the mining boomtown who is determined to maintain peace in the community.

Babylon 5 much?

Kinda, though in a much smaller case unfortunately( interstellar wars are out of question IMO). And it probably won't have an interstellar Austro-Hungarian empire with funny ambassadors either biggrin

The premise is quite similar nonetheless and I'm sure there will be a bunch of almost identical storylines which they borrowed.

A first trailer of the upcoming Battlestar Galactica spin off "Blood and Chrome" has been unveiled at recent Wondercon in Anaheim.

The story is set ten years into the start of the first Cylon war, and follows a young William “Husker” Adama as he is assigned to the Galactica as a fresh-from-the-academy pilot. B&C is clearly a space-based science fiction tv serie like BSG.

The trailer features stylish sci-fi action cut to Trent Reznor and Karen O’s cover of “Immigrant Song” from “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.”

Activate the HD option (top right of the video) for a better viewing.

According to IGN, this is not an official SyFy trailer, but was made by someone close to the production. Only the pilot has been shot and that was a few years ago; i'm not sure the serie will see the light one day.

Update : B&C will not become a serie; Syfy revealed that there will be a 90 min pilot movie, followed by a web serie

Quote
"Though the vision for 'Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome' has evolved over the course of the past year, our enthusiasm for this ambitious project has not waned," Mark Stern, president of original content at Syfy and co-head of original content at Universal Cable Productions, said in a statement. "We are actively pursuing it as was originally intended: a groundbreaking digital series that will launch to audiences beyond the scope of a television screen. The 90-minute pilot movie will air on Syfy in its entirety at a future date."

Former caped crusader David Lyons cast in (untitled) high profile NBC's drama pilot, penned by Supernatural creator Eric Kripke and exec produced by J.J. Abrams (Lost, Fringe, Alcatraz).

BTS - Promo photoshooting

The thriller is described as "a high-octane action drama following a group of characters struggling to survive and reunite with loved ones in a world where all forms of energy have mysteriously ceased to exist."

This along with Terra Nova cancellation? Feels like the sci-fi genre is dying in front of our eyes! I'm worried a bit, will there be any sci-fi show left after this sci-fi show genocide channels are doing?

And Alcatraz will probably be cancelled in the following days.

There is several sci-fi pilots ordered for next season (i mentioned them on the forum) but i would be surprised if one of them survived after one year; the genre is dying on tv whereas it's more powerful than ever on the big screen.

What is alarming is that the networks have tried every possible formulas (serialised, procedural, family-oriented,...) but none of them works.

Yeah, the new shows will probably die very fast too. It seems impossible to keep them alive even if they are brilliant and innovative their ratings go down and they are out. Its a pity because I have absolutely no idea what we, sci-fi fans will watch from now on.

Powerful on big screen? Which one? Avatar?

by the way have any of you seen the ark of truth?(spoiled child with a goddess complex-line from that movie )

Yes, and I developed a small fan crush on Morena because of it( I thought she was a true god by any definition ). Then I gazed into the Ark of Truth and I suddenly awakened that its Summer who is a true god by any definition and those who hate her will all burn in the fires of eternal damnation. biggrin

I still haven't figured out how could Joss made Inara so horrible with Morena through.

Althrough it doesn't matter because he helped the real god to emerge.

Hallowed are the Glau!!!

A thought came to me at a point after seing the episode where daniel return from having been an ancient, and then seeing the ark of truth. that why had they not ended the ark truth movie, with having the ancient, cannot remember what her name was just now, that beat Adria in the end. why did they not have her pop up with a beat up, angry, and perhaps pouting and mortal Adria in the end, and deliver her to her mother, perhaps even have her try to use her former powers, while sprouting that they will all burn in the flames of damnation, and find out they are gone - so that her mother could finally say the words - your are grounded! biggrin :D

If I remember correctly Adria wasn't "descended" by the Ark. Its just that instead of being a super powerful Ori who wielded all former Oris power she turned into a regular ascended who Morgan( I think she was Morgan from the round table legends) could finally fight. Without the Ark Morgan would have been squashed like a bug by Adria if she tried something devil

My only problem with the ending BTW was the Ark itself. Using obvious plot devices always made parts of SG-1 a bit anti-climatic IMO. It would have been much better IMO if the Ark didn't work and the Ancients were finally forced to combat Adria themselves. That battle would have been epic !

Dealine has published its latest short list of pilots for the pre-UpFronts week and Friedman's The Asset is not on the list anymore; it was mentioned that it "was fading" in the previous update.
Meaning there is little chances that the pilot will see the light (if you remember, his previous project Lock&Key was turned into a pilot but was ultimately not picked up as a serie); it seems that Friedman's creative ideas don't fit in the broadcast landscape where low quality series is synonym of high audience.

Yeah, guy is too clever and innovative for them. He successfully adapted an Asimov character into Tv-show format among other things so don't expect him to do Grey's Anatomy level stuff anytime soon.

Though I'm curious how is that Whedon could become so successful while Friedman could not do that. The two are on a very similar level as far as I can tell. Was Whedon that much luckier?

Whedon records before after Buffy (and before The Avengers) is not that successfull : Firefly cancelled, Serenity not a box-office hit, a Batman storyline that was rejected, Dollhouse cancelled, most recently there was Wonder Woman that he was going to write and direct for Joel Silver but it didn't happen.

Yes, they're on a similar level for me too.
The difference between Whedon and Friedman is the same difference between say Ali Larter (Heroes) and Summer Glau : the first mentioned have a successfull line in their resume (Buffy for Whedon and Heroes for Larter).
Having a hit (movie, tv show, script) in your resume is like honey for somebody running a studio and they're going to keep hiring you in projects for years.
No matter if people like Friedman or Summer have proved in every project they've been part of that they're skilled and creative in their domain. Welcome to Hollywood.

Yes, Whedons only hit( from a studio POV) was his Buffy related stuff as far as I know, he usually got stuff cancelled on his people( ok its arguable who was responsible, but in a sense that he lead the show).

But I'd call this Avangers a successful continuation and my question was regarding how the hell he could do that with a resume like that while Friedman couldn't?

Is it only because of Buffy? But that was ages ago. It doesn't even matter how long ago that one success was and that he screwed up the rest?

So the only thing that separated Summer from success was one relatively long running show? This is actually more sad than I first thought it is....
