I have watched every Alphas episode.

To me, the premise is decently interesting, more appealing than a good police procedural but less appealing than TSCC or Stargate SG1.

I find the Gary character greatly annoying, especially after his initial novelty wears off. On the other hand, I kinda like Cameron and Nina. (My interest in Nina has upside potential because I think Laura Mennell is quite attractive.) I am neutral on Bill and Rachel, and slightly negative on Dr. Rosen, who I see as dull and too obvious.

On balance, it is a decent show for me, and my level of interest will probably wax and wane with the quality of the story-writing for each episode. (So far the stories have been pretty good.) And of course the quality of the guest stars. (More Summer!)

As i've already said, no character is outstanding and i have no preferences between them; if i don't find them engaging individually, i like them as a team though.
Like you, i find Gary annoying, even if he has good lines sometimes; but such a character is like Cameron confronted to real people, or like Tarzan in New York if you prefer.

The next episodes will come back to the mithology of the show (Bighamton,...) and you will discover that Rosen is not that obvious.

Funny. Actually this is my problem with most of the current sci-fi shows.

Summer Glau is so awesome, it isn't even funny!

In case you were not convinced of Summer Glau's appealing power, read this:

Alphas's pilot and episode 7 'Catch and Release' are the only episodes available online at Syfy and on Hulu, whereas the pilot was the only one so far (for US viewers). Additional full episodes will be made available after the end of Alphas first season airing on Syfy.

I love it how Summers popularity jumped so much only with a simple episode. Couple this with her dominance in he online polls and its not nothing.

The best thing about this in my opinion is that it seems despite the producers(and other powers behind the industry) all efforts artists with talent and actresses who wish to become more than eyecandy still have a place in the industry and a strong support from many fans who are more loyal to them than to everyone else. And it shows too that there is still a considerable interest from the audience towards such artists. Of course I still don't think they are on the top(where they should be) but its not like nobody cares for them.

Exactly!
I monitor all comments on twitter and i saw the comments from old fans; but i also saw a lot of comments from people who did not know Summer guest starred in Alphas and discovered it later during repeats (cable networks do a lot of repeats). The specialised websites did their part in promoting Summer's guest appearance too, but not always the biggest ones though.

Same distinction can be made in online polls between big and small ones; the recent 'Destop Girl of the Week' i pointed won't give Summer a lot of extra exposure for example.

It was expected as i said for weeks but hearing the news is great!

Quote (tvline)
“Alphas’ smart, innovative approach to a superhero franchise has clearly caught on with our audience,” Mark Stern, Syfy’s president of original content, says of the pick-up. “From the first-rate writing to the outstanding cast lead by David Strathairn, we’re very proud of what was achieved in its first season and look forward to seeing this series fulfill even more of its creative potential in a second season.” Thirteen episodes have been ordered for Season 2, to air in 2012.

Alphas ratings aren't the best but i'm not surprised it got renewed :
1) the writing is good : it's not always superheroes doing superheroes things, that would be boring and expensive. Alphas adds character development in every episodes and it nurtures the overall arc story regularly.
2) the acting is good : Gary seems to be the fans favorite but i think all actors are playing their character well, without one being outstanding imo.
3) Syfy seems to support the show, despite lower ratings than Eureka for example; it must be because Alphas is relatively cheap to produce. Though be careful not to make cheap things like the scene in episode 7 where Nina and Skylar where on a car : it was made in a studio and it shows on the screen.

Syfy Press Release :

Quote
NEW YORK – September 7, 2011 – Syfy’s new super-powered original drama series Alphas, featuring a team of superhuman investigators, will be returning for a second season, it was announced today by Mark Stern, President, Original Content, Syfy, and Co-Head, Original Content, Universal Cable Productions. Syfy is ordering 13 episodes of the breakout scripted summer hit from series producers Universal Cable Productions and BermanBraun Television to air in 2012.

“Alphas’ smart, innovative approach to a superhero franchise has clearly caught on with our audience,” said Stern. “From the first-rate writing to the outstanding cast lead by David Strathairn, we’re very proud of what was achieved in its first season and look forward to seeing this series fulfill even more of its creative potential in a second season.”

Alphas debuted on July 11th and became Syfy’s most-watched original scripted series premiere in two years. To date, premiere episodes which air Monday nights at 10PM ET/PT have averaged 3.3 million total viewers (including all available Live +7 DVR data).

Comparatively, in both key demos, Alphas has outperformed other new and returning scripted series this season including Teen Wolf, Rescue Me,Hawthorne and The Killing. Alphas also tops Memphis Beat in Adults 18-49.

Alphas has scored impressive numbers with on demand viewers since its July launch averaging over 240,000 plays within 7 days per episode.Alphas is also Syfy’s most popular series in digital downloads
...
Notable guest stars this season include Summer Glau (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles), Garret Dillahunt (Raising Hope), Lindsay Wagner (The Bionic Woman), Brent Spiner (Star Trek: The Next Generation) and Rebecca Mader (Lost) on September 12th and John Pyper Ferguson (Caprica) on September 26th.
...

The most interesting thing about announcing the renewal so early is that sci-fi lovers who were hesitating watching the show will do it now; indeed, sci-fi fans have been disappointed so often in the past years by the cancelation of their favorite show after only one season that a lot of them wait to see if a serie is renewed before catching up on dvd (or online). They have no reason to wait now and Syfy should logically schedule an Alphas marathon to allow new viewers to catch up the 8 first episodes.
Not to mention the buzz generated by the announce itself.

I could not resist quoting what scifi mafia columnist wrote about Alphas renewal biggrin

Quote
Did you catch that? Brent Spiner (Star Trek: The Next Generation) and Rebecca Mader (Lost) will be on the next episode. Let the geekgasm ensue! Last week’s episode with Summer Glau was, for many viewers, the best episode of the season to date. Can Data and Charlotte beat their predecessor-guest-star precedent?

I hope next week episode will ensure a rating bump, considering the buzz generated by this announce and the phenomen i described in my previous post.

Monday Night Football on ESPN has returned and you can feel its effects on a lot of cable shows; the Monday lineup on Syfy was hard hit in terms of ratings.

Returning after a week off, Eureka had a 0.7 adults 18-49 rating (steady but lost 200k viewers), Warehouse 13 drew a 0.6 adults 18-49 rating (lost 0.2 point and 400k viewers), and Alphas scored a 0.5 adults 18-49 rating with 1.510 millions viewers (lost 0.1 point and 280k viewers).

For Alphas, the trend since the pilot is as following (18-49 demo ratings and millions viewers):

Pilot : 0.9 and 2.5
Ep 2 : 0.8 and 2.225
Ep 3 : 0.7 and 1.934
Ep 4 : 0.7 and 2.031
Ep 5 : 0.7 and 2.011
Ep 6 : 0.6 and 1.832
Ep 7 : 0.7 and 1.879
Ep 8 : 0.6 and 1.789
Ep 9 : 0.5 and 1.510

Too bad the ratings keep going down because the show is improving regularly and last Monday episode was a good one, exploring and expanding the mithology of the show. Unfortunately, Alphas has not very much press, nor have the actors (only minor interviews not worth reproducing here).

Alphas has already been renewed for a second season but next season, one can expect a move to another time slot if the ratings continue to decrease though.

Side note : you can see clearly the ratings bump due to Summer Glau's guest appearance. But as it was the case for TSCC or The Cape, even if viewers says they continue to watch the show only for her, it's not enough to insure high ratings
