The CW's Arrow Casts Caity Lotz as Its Black Canary (sort of)

The CW's Arrow Casts Caity Lotz as Its Black Canary
Caity Lotz is joining The CW's Arrow as DC comics character Black Canary

The Wrap revealed that the famous DC comics character Black Canary will be joining season 2 of Arrow but it appears that series regular Laurel Lance (played by Katie Cassidy) won't be transitioning into Black Canary (her longtime superhero alias in the source material.) as fan were expecting; instead, Arrow's writers have decided to bring in another actress for the "golden age" version of the character and cast "The Pact" star Caity Lotz.

Quote
While the Black Canary will start out as a recurring role, Lotz is expected to eventually become a series regular, as her character will be groomed as a love interest for Arrow (Stephen Amell).

The Black Canary is a notable character in the DC Comics franchise, and both The CW and the producers of "Arrow" are high on its potential.

That makes two new love interest for Oliver Queen, considering Summer Glau's character Isabel Rochev might also be one (read Blog post: "Arrow: Will Summer Glau be Oliver's new love interest?".)

I must say this is a bit confusing and hopefully the Arrow Comic-Con panel on Saturday will clear this up.
UPDATE: Arrow's executive producer Andrew Kreisberg set the record straight on Black Canary casting; read message below. You can also see Black Canary in the sizzle reel unveiled at SDCC 2013.

UPDATE: Caity Lotz has, in fact, been cast for a recurring role on Arrow's second season, but she won't be playing Dinah Drake/Black Canary, revealed Arrow executive producer Andrew Kreisberg in an interview at tvguide.

Quote
"There's been a bit of misinformation printed out there and what I would say is, yes, Caity Lotz is joining the show in a recurring role and we're really excited," executive producer Andrew Kreisberg tells us. "She's a tremendously talented actress. The character she's playing is really the beginning of the story of the Black Canary."

The fact that Lotz's character, whose name Kreisberg declined to reveal, has a connection to the Black Canary has worried fans who believed that Katie Cassidy's Laurel Lance would fill that role, as the comics dictate. But Kreisberg wants to set the record straight. "The character that Caity is portraying is the beginning of the Black Canary story and we're really excited for the fans to go on the journey with us," he says. "So much of our show is about defying expectations, meeting expectations and exceeding expectations, and we really want our fans to experience the show by watching it and enjoying it and enjoying all the twists and turns and surprises the way we intend."

Did you read my take on Summer Glau's character on Arrow? I produce some hypotheses based on the hints given by the writers in season ones and the latest spoilers on Arrow season two: Will Arrow stick to the Comic Book Character?

Also it seems Summer Glau's character will still be a mistery at the begining of the season. They did the same with John Barrowman's character Malcom Merlyn, who was called simply "The Well-dressed man" when he appeared first. Read this interview with Arrow stars Stephen Amell and Emily Bett Rickards.

Kevin Alejandro and Michael Jai White to Guest Star in Arrow season 2. The announce was made at the Arrow panel at 2013 SDCC.

Quote
SAN DIEGO and BURBANK, Calif. (July 20, 2013) — Oliver Queen (series star Stephen Amell) will have his work cut out for him when he returns to Starling City on October 9 for the second season of The CW’s #1 series Arrow (Wednesdays 8/7c). At today’s Comic-Con panel session in Ballroom 20, fans learned of two new DC Comics characters coming to Starling City — Bronze Tiger and Sebastian Blood. Executive producers Greg Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Andrew Kreisberg revealed that Michael Jai White (Spawn, The Dark Knight, Mortal Kombat) will guest star as Bronze Tiger, while Kevin Alejandro (Southland, True Blood, Golden Boy) will appear as Sebastian Blood in upcoming episodes of the acclaimed action drama’s second season (airdates to be announced).

– Michael Jai White plays Ben Turner, a claw-wielding assassin better known as Bronze Tiger, who’s well known to DC Comics fans as a member of both the League of Assassins and the Suicide Squad. On Arrow, he’ll form an unholy alliance with fan-favorite villain China White (played by Kelly Hu), another well-established character in the DC Comics universe.

– Kevin Alejandro plays Sebastian Blood. Drawing inspiration from the iconic New Teen Titans nemesis Brother Blood, Sebastian is an alderman who rises to power in the wake of the earthquake that devastated Starling City in Arrow’s first-season finale. Blood’s “man-of-the-people” popularity instantly places him at odds with Oliver Queen, whose family he blames for the quake.

Here's an extract from the Arrow panel at 2013 San Diego Comic Con, thanks to formytots0128. Arrow's co-creator and executive producer Marc Guggenheim mentions the addition of Summer Glau to the cast of the second season of Arrow.

Quote
Discussion of who will be appearing in Season 2 - brief mention of Summer Glau and her new character Isabel Rochev with production shooting already started. Lots of applause and cheers from the fans when Summer first appeared on the trailer of the season 2 premier. It's a good example of Summer's popularity with Comic Con fans. :)

Here were the best tidbits from the Q&A portion of the panel:

One leftover moment from the trailer, wherein Oliver announces he doesn’t want to be known as “The Hood” anymore, and when Diggle asks for a suggestion, Oliver knowingly eyes a green arrowhead.
In addition to the new villains, season 2 will be Moira’s season of redemption, hoping to see if things with the Queen family can be patched up. Meanwhile, Oliver will have difficulty running Queen Consolidated, while Thea takes over the club for her brother.
Tommy’s death will overshadow much of the second season, and continually influence Laurel and Oliver’s actions. David Ramsey also revealed that season 2 will take a much closer look at Oliver’s use of lethal force in acting as a vigilante.
Coining the shipping name “Delicity,” Emily Bett Rickards wouldn’t decide if her character Felicity were better off to get involved with either Oliver or Diggle, though the fans clearly rooted for “Ollicity.”
Colton Haynes offered that ‘Arrow’ season 2 would be something of an “island” for Roy Harper, providing the necessary crucible to get on par with Oliver’s own transformation into badass vigilante hero. Haynes and Stephen Amell joked about who’d fare better in a salmon ladder competition.
Asked if Manu Bennett would finally become Deathstroke proper this year, producers teased that the opening moments of the season 2 premiere would heavily hint at the arc for the character.

It's funny if he start calling himself Green Arrow after he dissed the moniker somewhere in the 1st season, saying it's lame. To which I agree, but what else would he call himself otherwise, so I don't hold much if any hope they will come up with something original else than that.

It will be fun to see his sister trying to manage the night club tho, that seems like a fresh idea. :P

I am sure Summer will help him manage QC for sure. happy

Olicity > Delicity! :P

Dunno why but I don't care much about "Red Arrow/Hood" s story, being bcs we have Summer and all the rest of the great like Felicity or Kelly Hu or other characters' story lines being more intriguing than his. Deathstroke's journey will be 100% more appealing. I am sure the writers will do a good job on Roy, I just hope we won't be bored with him, instead having more spotlight on Summer, Olicity & DS. ^^

On a side or not so side note, since Caity Lotz won't play black canary, but we DID see the Black Canary  in the trailer, (if that wasn't some sort of a black cat cover, I am not really familiar with the Arrow comics universe at all so I am barefooted in cold water here) the question is, could that be Katie Cassidy herself there? :P
We already know that the execs of this show turn to love to trow plastic bones like hinting the joining of Lisa instead Isabel.
However unless they "reveal" the black canary's pre-history, how Laurel's mother was the BC and stuff and how she teach her to become BC, but I don't think they will take this approach in the show. Hence we already saw Cassidy kicking ass due to her father being a cop and she took self defense classes, I rather believe if she gets to play BC it will be self prodigal or something like that, which I really kinda prefer in this case.

But the question remains, WHO IS THIS BLACK LEATHER WHITE HAIRED HERO/VILLAIN?
I guess the producers succeeded in causing buzz n fans to wonder what is this or what will be.

There was a bit of confusion when it was announced that Caity Lotz would join Arrow as a Black Canary lookalike.

To makes things clear, the blond girl at the end of the trailer is probably Caity Lotz in a Black Canary precursor role (name is unknown so far)
"The character that Caity is portraying is the beginning of the Black Canary story"

But Katie Cassidy will ultimately be the Black Canary, as in the Comic books.

Think about The Green Arrow character himself, the first we saw in Arrow was Yao Fei, in the island:

Yeah, that was what my first impression left me with after reading what the producers have said about it, but after reading more stuff it kinda gets more confusing over time even if rereading what I already have. Plus I am a prodigy in distracting myself.

But anyways it's great that this whole thing is so intriguing and so far gathering some good amount of interest around the web.
I wonder whether we will see the special Shadoliver time on the island in season 2 aswell as Olicity time at last. But ten again they might skip the Shado part in the series, which will pre-conceivingly abort Robert and hence some story line from the comics, unless they somehow run out of Yao Fei's magical powder that heals everything so Oliver can get malaria and Shado can *cough* "take use" of him and *cough* *cough* rape him in such a mannerless manner. Which will give a perfect reason for Oliver and Shado's departion from one another as Oliver left the island alone in season 1 when he remembered his rescue, which brings the question how did she got off the island and unless Oliver killed her too, why didn't he go with her, even if she allegedly forced him to have sex.

Well yeah, she got it nearly 100% so not to get pretty anal on about it. However I was just like Oliver and never had seen a single episode of FF even thought Serenity was a prequel to the series -_>.
But now I can answer anything I know about the show even in my sleep as they say.
So more or less this girl is just another poser stereotypical reporter.
