what ticks joss whedon off. lack of super heroine films `pisses off` joss whedon. joss whedon is well known for creating strong female characters, most notably buffy, the vampire slayer. but just because he has had success with such characters, it doesnt mean that he wants to be the only one to do so and the fact that there doesnt seem to be anyone else who has followed his lead has him upset. whedon expressed his displeasure with a studio system that doesnt see the profit in putting a female superhero on the big screen. my daughter watched the avengers and was like, `my favorite characters were the black widow and maria hill` and i thought, yeah, of course they were, i have no doubt that part of whedon`s irritation stems from his working on a wonder woman film for warner brothers that never got made. given that whedon has confirmed that the super heroine scarlet witch will be in avengers 2, perhaps that will inspire more filmmakers, and more importantly more film studios, to not have their female characters be token sidekicks but at the forefront of the action.

Earth`s Population Approaching 7 Billion, Can The Planet Sustain Humanity. The World population is about to hit 7 billion people. That`s significantly less than what `Antoni Van Leeuwenhoek` predicted back in the 17th century when he estimated there were about 13.4 billion people on earth. A number we now believe was closer to half a billion at the time.  Human population is always going up, although some events like the Black Plague have lead to minor declines, and that rate has increased exponentially in the decades since `Leeuwenhoek` first contemplated the number of people milling about on the planet, In the early 1900`s we reached 2 billion, and less than a century later we`re hitting 7 billion, That means for the first time ever there are humans who have lived through not just a doubling of human population, but some even witness a tripling. National Geographic has an in-depth look at what the population explosion means to the planet. The year long study on human population includes a detailed analysis of the history of human accounting, and a look at how the planet may or may not be able to handle the 9.1 billion that`s expected to exist by 2045. What it all comes down to is that the planet can handle any number of us humans, it`s how much we consume that is the issue. people living longer lives, a central issue in the fantastic `Albert Brooks` novel 2030, is just one of the ways mankind is sticking around using up more resources. We can`t expect to stop that, but there are only so many fossil fuels to be used. The NatGeo piece is a fascinating read, with a look at many sides to the issue. It even brings to mind the many dystopian sci-fi stories Where population control is a real problem. Could we be facing our own dystopian future, or will human ingenuity win out.

Michael Crichton Would Have Turned 71. Today In Science And Science Fiction. Michael Crichton is one of those writers in the same camp as Philip K. Dick or Stephen King. Its not that their style or material is similar at all, but rather that Hollywood has gone gaga over it throughout the years, How Gaga/ Here`s a list of movies and miniseries adapted from Crichton`s books, The Andromeda Strain, The Terminal Man, The Great Train Robbery, Jurassic Park and its sequels, Rising Sun, Disclosure, Congo, Sphere, Coma, The 13th Warrior, and Timeline, And I`m sure I missed a few, Just as with Dick and King, most of those adaptations are forgettable, with a few true gems sprinkled among them, Still, Crichton is definitely one of the writers who had a huge impact on movies in the latter half of the 20th century, and without him we wouldn`t have gotten `Steven Spielberg`s` Jurassic Park, so we`ve got to thank the guy for that, Hell, he even wrote and directed Westworld in 1973, Crichton was born on this day in 1942, and passed away on November 4, 2008.

I found an old interesting article from november 3rd, 2009,  Joss Whedon"s "Terminator" Offer Falls Short. Joss Whedon"s bid to buy the Terminator franchise for $10,000 looks likely to fall flat - the sellers are asking for $70 million for the rights to the sci-fi series. The Buffy The Vampire Slayer creator wrote an open letter to Halcyon Co. bosses after learning they were auctioning the franchise as part of the company"s bankruptcy process. Offering the five-figure sum, he proclaimed, "I loved the movies, even the later movies, I loved the mythology, I loved the TV show (The Sarah Connor Chronicles) - like, really loved. Not for pretend." However, Halcyon chiefs are hoping for a figure 7,000 times higher when the rights go under the hammer in January, and are determined to make a profit on the $30 million they paid for the franchise in 2003. Spokesperson Kevin Schultz tells Daily Variety, "This is a unique asset - the only Hollywood tent pole asset that"s not owned by a studio. We have a property that has made three times the box office of the four (Teenage Mutant Ninja) Turtles films." The last installment, Terminator Salvation, cost $200 million to make and took an estimated $371 million worldwide. The offer was a bit short surely it wasn"t a joke was it ?.

Blockbuster Video Is Dead Last 300 Stores To Close And Mail Service To End. But now only the memories remain, Blockbuster was killed by Netflix and the rise of on-demand, and now the last 300 stores will close and its mail service will end. Hit the jump for more, When Blockbuster filed for bankruptcy in September 2010, it was bought by DISH Network. According to the Chicago Tribune, DISH will keep the Blockbuster brand alive " by focusing on streaming and on-demand services currently offered to customers" Nevertheless, the Blockbuster video era as we know it has come to a close. It was inevitable, and I"m surprised it hadn"t already happened. And it makes me a bit wistful. I know Blockbuster was far from perfect, and I complained about them on a regular basis when they were open. However, the disappearance of rental stores has highlighted the dearth of options and immediate satisfaction of seeing a particular movie. on-demand and Netflix Instant have plenty of movies, and yet their selection still seems limited. Search for 20 movies you want to see on Netflix Instant, and I"ll bet at least half of them are only available on DVD. If you want to rent a DVD of some classic and/or obscure title you probably won"t get it with Netflix Instant. It"s a sign of the times unfortunately.

Martin Scorsese Nearing Retirement ?
Quote
Scorsese has hinted that he may have as little as two productions left in his career before the 71 year old film maker retires. Here is what he had to say: "Desire ? Yes, I have the desire to make many films, but as of now I"m 71 and there"s only a couple more left if I get to make them. I miss the time when I had the desire to experiment and try different kinds of films, I miss that time, but that"s done, It"s over. There is obligation as you get older, you have family. I"ve been very lucky in the last 10 years or so, to have found projects that combine the desire, the subject matter --- from " The Aviator " to now -- with, as best I can, fulfilling the obligation to my family and the financiers" - Obviously it would come as incredibly upsetting news to film fans worldwide to hear that Scorsese had retired, however with the multiple masterpieces that he has given us, I think the man has more than earned a wonderful long retirement. In the mean time we still have The Wolf Of Wall Street on the way which looks fantastic and at least two more films after that before Scorsese"s potential retirement. Lets just hope that we get that long promised reunion between him and De Niro before any more talk of retiring. After all, Casino was a very long time ago.

Paul Walker Death: Porsche Was Traveling More Than 100 MPH, Coroner Finds
Quote
The Porsche that "Fast & Furious" star Paul Walker died in was traveling at a speed of more than 100 miles per hour when it crashed in November, the Los Angeles County coroner"s department has determined. The report notes that Walker"s friend and business partner Roger Rodas -- who was driving the Porsche during the fiery crash -- tested negative for alcohol and drugs, as did Walker, The deaths have been deemed accidental, caused by an auto colliding with a fixed object. most recently I watched one of his latest movies a film called "Hours" (2013). set in 2005 in the wake of the Hurricane Katrina floods, Great acting from Paul Walker and a very good film, R.I.P. (Paul Walker).

Predicting Marvel"s Next 12 Movies Up To 2021  (Phase One)
Quote
12. (Doctor Strange 2016), Why? This is perhaps the most surefire guarantee of all the predictions. Though it hasn"t been officially confirmed, Feige has frequently admitted to a love of the character and suggested it may be one of the two movies scheduled in for 2016. 11. (Thor 3 2016), Why? Yes, Marvel will be forging a new lineup throughout phase 3, but with Iron Man gone until Avengers 3, Thor will be the one to hold audience"s hands after the risk of Doctor Strange. If It fails, at least Thor will provide damage control for that year and hopefully make up for the God of Thunder"s dire second outing, The Dark World. Due to the mystic nature of Doctor Strange and the Cosmic nature of Thor, they actually go nicely hand-in-hand. 10. (Captain America 3 2017), Why? The reason for his return on the list are the same as Thor"s and there"s every chance Marvel will want to wrap up Cap"s story as well in preparation for what will go down in Avengers 3. 9. (Guardians Of The Galaxy 2 2017), Why? This is both a film and a placing that"s not certain, as there"s no way to predict how Guardians Of The Galaxy will go down critically or commercially. And if my predictions for 2016 are true, this might be too much cosmic in too short a time. But even if the first film does poorly, It"s likely a sequel will be greenlit, and it will either be in 2017 or not at all.

Predicting Marvel"s Next 12 Movies Up To 2021  (Phase Two)
Quote
8. (Black Panther 2018), Why? With Don Cheadle"s War Machine, Anthony Mackie"s Falcon and the Luke Cage series on Netflix, Marvel is no stranger to African-American heroes-more than DC"s movies, anyway, but to headline an actual feature film, outside of America or Europe? It"s going to be an interesting choice of movie, but a necessary one and likely an awesome one-exactly the kind of risks Marvel took back in the beginning. As it wraps up its third phase, it might just be building a new path to ensure its longevity through Black Panther. 7. (The Avengers 3 2018), Why? Because It"s the Avengers! The final part of the trilogy. A true milestone in superhero movies, and hopefully one that will change the face of the MCU forever. 6. (Ms Marvel 2019), Why? It"s interesting to note how late It"s taken for a Marvel movie led by a female superhero. Although, It"s anyone"s guess as to whether Wonder Woman will get her own solo movie between her appearance in 2015"s Man of Steel sequel and 2019. Is the world ready for this movie? Yes, but are the businessmen who run the movie studios? Probably not. These are the same people who cancel cartoons that appeal to girls because they want to appeal to boys, who will buy more toys. But that"s another issue all together. 5. (New Hulk Movie 2019), Why? Because Ruffalo and the Hulk need a chance to spread their wings from supporting scene-stealers to genuine leading men. and yes, they need to be referred to as separate entities. Whatever this film is, it should be a character study of both Hulk and Banner, and someone like Ang Lee would be perfect here, if combined with the blockbuster entertainment mindset of Louis Letterier. It should follow the likes of Nolan"s Batman films in that it takes time to really say something, but be a lot more entertaining. Anything but a brainless CGI-fest and we should be fine.

Predicting Marvel"s Next 12 Movies Up To 2021  (Phase Three)
Quote
4. (Ant-Man 2 2020), Why? A combination of reassuring audiences after the huge events of Avengers 3 with a familiar face, and that fact that they don"t want to be introducing loads of new character straight after the ones we love- Iron Man, Cap, Thor, - are either killed or sitting on the benches for a while. Of course, if the first film is a huge success, It"s going to pay off in a big way to give people a more comedic, light-hearted Marvel film that is scaled down. 3. (Doctor Strange 2 2020), Why? Avengers 3 will leave a clean slate for the already-popular Black Panther and Ms Marvel to make their mark, so now their new Tony Stark, Stephen Strange, will show just what he"s made of by knocking it out of the park. Hulk didn"t work so well in 2019, so it"s Strange who"s going to guide the audiences through Phase 4. 2. (Black Panther 2 2021), Why? See both films predicted for 2020. 1. (X-Men/ Fantastic Four/ Spiderman Crossover 2021), Why? And this is one of the reasons we only get introduced to one major new character after Avengers 3. There"s been rumours before, and even the attempt to include the Oscorp tower in The Avengers "New York skyline. By now, X-Men would have lost Hugh Jackman and done 10 or 11 films, Spiderman would have finished its tetralogy and Venom spinoff, the Fantastic Four reboot would be nearing its third film. And by now It"ll be all or nothing. Marvel hasn"t introduced any new characters for the same reason they didn"t for Avengers 3 - It"s going to be crowded enough as it is.

Quote
British actor Roger Lloyd-Pack - best known for his role as the loveable dimwit Trigger in the classic British sitcom Only Fools And Horses - has passed away today aged 69 after losing his battle with pancreatic cancer. "Vampire Diaries," "Originals," and "Drop Dead Diva," Shut Down Production Over Georgia Storm

The catastrophic Atlanta ice storm has left thousands without power - including the production of three high-profile TV series.

The CW"s The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, both of which film in Atlanta, have shut down production due to the winter storm that is passing through the northern part of the metropolitan area.

The storm is expected to worsen through Wednesday, with travel becoming functionally impossible, according to the National Weather Service. However, the two shows are only expected to miss one day of production. Yet the same can"t be said for a certain cable series.

Lifetime"s Drop Dead Diva, which also films in Atlanta, has shut down production for both Wednesday and Thursday. Lifetime"s Devious Maids also films in Atlanta,

All the best to the people of Georgia during this terrible storm!

Spain Will Get A Star Trek Theme Park In 2015

Do you have plans for your next big vacation? Well, If you"re looking for an international getaway with some serious geek overtones, we have a destination that you definitely have to consider. We"re talking about a new Star Trek-centric theme park in Spain that is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2015.

According to StarTrek.com, Plaza Futura will be a part of Paramount Park Murcia, which is located approximately 270 miles southeast of Madrid on the mediterranean coast at Alhama de Murcia. From the description this is going to be one hell of a destination. Broken up into a bunch of different sections, the new addition is going to have a little bit of everything. It will feature everything from condos, hotels, and offices, to shopping centers, restaurants, a casino and nightclubs, and even a convention center. And then there"s the actual theme park.

From a large square designed to resemble something from the Trek universe, you"ll be able access the Starfleet Spain recruiting center, in case you want to sign up to take a jaunt around space on a Federation starship. There will also be a 3D simulator that will allow visitors to experience what such an intergalactic trip might look like, and it looks a little bit like an updated Star Tours from Disneyland in the 1980s.

The most fun portion of this park promises to be the Warp Speed roller coaster. No only will the ride soar to incredible heights and reach warp speeds, It will also feature several loops to simulate evasive maneuvers, and a trip through a Wormhole. In reality the Wormhole is just a segment of the ride that goes underground, but still, when was the last time a roller coaster took you through a pretend Wormhole? That sounds like a pretty good time to us.
