What's Up?

When you visit the Summer Glau Wiki, you don't have necessarily a brilliant comment to make on a specific thread on the forum; consider this thread as the equivalent of a chat or a social newtwork like Twitter. Most of the time, people announce they're here and ask what's up.

This thread is made to tell the community what's on your mind at the present time, what movie you wanna watch or what book you're reading. Tell us about your history teacher who you find boring if you like.

As it so happens my history teacher is one of the most colorful professors around. Lets just say that political correctness is not of much concern.

Right now I am going to start season 3 of Battle Star Galactica, which from what I have gathered on the internet is when the shit hits the fan and never really gets cleaned up all too well. Once I start a show I am in it till the end so hopefully the hate is a little overblown, because I will just have to brave it. I already know the gist of the ending anyways and can tell it will annoy me almost as much as the last season of Lost.

Keep Flying - Not much, but it's enough.

Yeah, i had a hard time finishing the serie myself.

Then i started watching its prequel Caprica but the Gods of television/cancelation decided otherwise.

Unfortunately for Blazius and all the fans of intergalactical battle, Battlestar Galactica : Blood & Chrome (The adventures of young William Adama in the First Cylon War) may very well never see the light or be broacasted on the web only.

Spin offs can get irritating past a point. More disappointing is that there are no new space operas to speak of.

You have no idea how much it pains me that there will be no more intergalactical wars and aliens and spaceships and big space fights and time travel episodes and multidimensional journeys and laser guns and intimidating huge evil interstellar empires with cool spaceship designs and doomsday weapons and badass, evil rulers of such empires or evil all consuming insectoids or cyborgs and so on...you got it cry cry cry

And its a fresh wound anyway because I reserved SGU till now because I knew it was cancelled but you don't realize that its over till you see the last episode and you ask: Is it over? Thats it? Only after 2 seasons?

And it reminded me of TSCC and I got so depressed. SGU wasn't without flaws but it was very clever with good ideas and it was at least not that childish and a military propaganda as its predecessors.

Summer Glau is so awesome, it isn't even funny!

It seems like us science fiction fans always have quite a bit of mourning to do. By the way you suggested Babylon 5 anything else to add? I periodically become obsessed with certain subjects and at this point it is television science fiction (always liked science fiction, but man firefly really made me want to dive in).

Every Star Trek series except maybe TOS for example( don't listen to the Trek haters, Trek is good, and we don't have too many options anyway).

They each 7 seasons long so you'll be busy with them for some time.

Then there are Stargate Sg1 and Atlantis which I found a bit "childish" sometimes and they have too much american humor for me and they are a bit military propaganda but those shows can be fun despite those flaws and have great concepts nonetheless. You should start with the movie first on which the series is based on.

Farscape is a bit unconventional to say at least, somebody likes it somebody don't I didn't watch it till the end but maybe if there is nothing else left I'll finish it. You can try it to see if you like it or not.

I'm watching Andromeda now which i'd not recommend because its quite awful so far but maybe I'll rant about it later here if I have nothing more to say smile

On the top of that Star Trek has eleven TV movies, Babylon 5 has five( six in reality but no matter what happens skip Legacy of the Rangers! You don't want to see it believe me wink )

Stargate has two minus the original film.

Farscape has one movie.

These are just my favorites from the space based ones and despite the flaws I listed to beware I think they'll make a very good watch.

And of course one thing all these shows are missing is Summer Glau but she had no way to be cast in most of them anyway( she is too young, started acting too late for them)

Summer Glau child actor in older Science Fiction shows. That would be something strange or perhaps completely awesome.

Space based all the way. There really needs to be at least one more new one. I mean come one not even one since what? BSG? (it has to be good though or do not even bother).

What could possibly be so bad? I am a completionist when it comes to shows I like even a bit, and from what I have seen Babylon 5 will certainly be a top dog. That request may be hard to follow through with. biggrin Luckily I am one of those who does not mind ret-conning various fictional Universes if it seems fitting to me, so it is unlikely to phase me.

I love and hate star trek at the same time. It seems quite important to the science fiction genre, yet the optimism is a bit ridiculous. From what I have seen in the Star Trek universe for no explained reason humanity exists in a state with little to no inner conflict which is very unrealistic (yes it is SF, but that does not mean human nature changes). This is forgivable considering that Science Fiction has always had a focus on optimism, but I am glad that this mood is changing to a more realistic, but cynical view of humanity as seen in firefly or BSG.

I thought this too when somebody told me to beware of it. The problem is that mostof the ingenious, innovative things you see in the original series are absent in this film and its filled with clichés and a very bad, standard story and one dimensional characters. And there is a retcon too but its so insulting that I got really mad in the end. And another problem is that it was essentially only the movie long pilot of a planned spinoff but it never happened thankfully because everybody saw its going to be godawful.

Well, ranting on movies can be fun sometimes so you can watch if you are a completionist.

Forgot to add: The safest way BTW is to watch the movies after the series so you don't get spoilered. Its very important for B5 to remain spoiler-free!!!

That would have been amazing I think. Sadly or not she was too busy with dancing at that time.

If they won't make another I'll starve to death without them sad

The Federation is essentially a space based socialist utopia. The idea is that in the future with the help of the Vulcans humanity develops the replicator technology which is able to produce unlimited resources on its own.

Since everybody gets equally from the unlimited resources the social inequality has been eliminated along with money. Since replicators take care of the economy people can decide what they wish to work themselves and they had time to learn and study more and they became more civilized, evolved getting rid of their animalistic nature most as they could. Thats why they are so peaceful and idealistic according to the lore( and Picards preachings mostly)

I have not that much problem with the optimism BTW. I actually find it as a unique, appealing thing in Trek, other fictions are not that optimistic at all.

Maybe if Picard were a bit less preachy others wouldn't have that much problem with it either.

There's a problem with such optimism. There will always be something limited, choices and sacrifices people will have to make. For example a popular band will not have the capability of giving live concerts to every human in the federation regardless of resources. Sure you could say the Federation would limit such things, but how are they to limit things such as two men who fall for the same women. There will still need to be a certain layout of job occupation to make society function even with limitless resources. Also there is absolutely no indication that the leaders in charge have much large disagreements about anything of importance unless something forces their hand and this is quite contrary to reality. All these problems are merely hand-waved so I find it hard to believe. Not to mention that such problems are good ways of exploring humanity of themselves and can have even greater ramifications in Science Fiction settings.

While I do not find a socialist utopia completely impossible (particularly with SF technology and alien cultures in the mix) it's taken to extremes when they seem to suggest that everyone is magically free from envy and murder in normal human society. It is just ridiculous to expect human society to ever become in such a state considering our history. Technology is not going to fix every problem of society because some problems have roots that dig down deep into humanity itself. I just find future societies with similar problems to current days more realistic than perfect ones like in Star Trek. To be absolutely fair the actual behavior of characters in Star Trek does demonstrate that human nature is still in affect. It just seems whenever they describe human society as a whole there are no such things as anger or depression.

Far better than answering questions poorly. If you can only make the answers in your head you know they will be satisfactory biggrin
