Syfy Renews Alphas for Season 2

Syfy gives Alphas a season 2; Summer Glau's character Skylar, that she played in episode 7 'Catch and Release', could very well come back next year.

Syfy Press Release :
NEW YORK – September 7, 2011 – Syfy’s new super-powered original drama series Alphas, featuring a team of superhuman investigators, will be returning for a second season, it was announced today by Mark Stern, President, Original Content, Syfy, and Co-Head, Original Content, Universal Cable Productions. Syfy is ordering 13 episodes of the breakout scripted summer hit from series producers Universal Cable Productions and BermanBraun Television to air in 2012.

"Alphas’ smart, innovative approach to a superhero franchise has clearly caught on with our audience,” said Stern. "From the first-rate writing to the outstanding cast lead by David Strathairn, we’re very proud of what was achieved in its first season and look forward to seeing this series fulfill even more of its creative potential in a second season.”

Alphas debuted on July 11th and became Syfy’s most-watched original scripted series premiere in two years. To date, premiere episodes which air Monday nights at 10PM ET/PT have averaged 3.3 million total viewers (including all available Live +7 DVR data).

Comparatively, in both key demos, Alphas has outperformed other new and returning scripted series this season including Teen Wolf, Rescue Me,Hawthorne and The Killing. Alphas also tops Memphis Beat in Adults 18-49.

Alphas has scored impressive numbers with on demand viewers since its July launch averaging over 240,000 plays within 7 days per episode.Alphas is also Syfy’s most popular series in digital downloads
Notable guest stars this season include Summer Glau (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles), Garret Dillahunt (Raising Hope), Lindsay Wagner (The Bionic Woman), Brent Spiner (Star Trek: The Next Generation) and Rebecca Mader (Lost) on September 12th and John Pyper Ferguson (Caprica) on September 26th.

Alphas ratings aren't the best but i'm not surprised it got renewed :
1) the writing is good : it's not always superheroes doing superheroes things, that would be boring and expensive. Alphas adds character development in every episodes and it nurtures the overall arc story regularly.
2) the acting is good : Gary seems to be the fans favorite but i think all actors are playing their character well, without one being outstanding imo.
3) Syfy seems to support the show, despite lower ratings than Eureka for example; it must be because Alphas is relatively cheap to produce. Though be careful not to make cheap things like the scene in episode 7 where Nina and Skylar where on a car : it was made in a studio and it shows on the screen.

The most interesting thing about announcing the renewal so early is that sci-fi lovers who were hesitating watching the show will do it now; indeed, sci-fi fans have been disappointed so often in the past years by the cancelation of their favorite show after only one season that a lot of them wait to see if a serie is renewed before catching up on dvd (or online). They have no reason to wait now and Syfy should logically schedule an Alphas marathon to allow new viewers to catch up the 8 first episodes.
Not to mention the buzz generated by the announce itself.

2011 Desktop Girl of the Week Tournament : Summer wins highlights a Desktop Girl of the Week and since it has selected 32 DGOW, the site conduct a poll to crown a winner among these 32 women, hence the 2011 Desktop Girl of the Week Tournament.

The championship match should be set on August 31, and voting on that will run through September 10. Then on Wednesday, September 14, will unveil the 2011 Desktop Girl of the Week Tournament champion.
Who will join Monica Bellucci (2005), Christina Aguilera (2008) and Scarlett Johansson (2010) as Desktop Girl of the Week champions?

Well, the results are in!

Summer Glau won the Desktop Girl of the Week Tournament with a whopping 95.6% of the vote in the final where she was pitted against Emma Stone (star of the upcoming 'The Amazing Spider-man').

Quote (Adam Reisinger)
Well, that was just... not close. It was not close to a level that defies non-closeness. With a record number of votes cast in the four-tournament history of the DGOW tournament, Summer Glau captured an incredible 95.6% of the vote. It obviously helped that multiple Summer-focused websites picked up on the poll and publicized links, but even without those, Emma Stone would have never stood a chance.

So, Summer adds her name to this list:

2005: Monica Bellucci
2008: Christina Aguilera
2010: Scarlett Johansson
2011: Summer Glau

That'd make a sweet Final Four for a tournament of champions, wouldn't it?

And, as promised, here's Summer's victory prize (well, technically a victory prize for those that supported Summer). Enjoy!

The surprise is a nice video with Summer in her best roles; check it at the site!

2011 Desktop Girl Tournament - Final Four

Semifinal #1: Rachel McAdams vs Emma Stone

Semifinal #2: Summer Glau vs. Sarah Michelle Gellar

direct link to vote for Summer Glau :  2011 Desktop Girl Tournament - Final Four

On the first round, Summer Glau was pitted against The Cape alumni Izabella Miko
Analysis: Let's be honest here, this is an internet vote, and Summer Glau dominates internet votes. Well, technically River Tam dominates internet votes. All it'll take is one link to this from the io9 community and not only will Glau win this match-up, but she'll probably win the entire thing. But here's the thing. Izabella Miko is... (Joss forgive me)... hotter. It's true. Plus she's crazy involved with all sorts of green initiatives, which is hot in its own way.

Prediction: It's the internet. Glau will win. Easily. But I voted for Miko.

Results : Summer Glau won with 72% of the votes.

On the second round, Summer Glau was pitted against Laura Vandervoort
Analysis: As I pointed out last round, Summer Glau has a tendency to dominate these types of Internet votes, but Laura Vandervoort has a vocal fan base too, and they came out in droves in the first round. Either way, one of these sci-fi hotties is going out this round, which is going to be disappointing to many.

Prediction: Glau's ahead now, but I could see Vandervoort pulling off a comeback.

Results : Summer Glau won with 62% of the votes.

On the third round, Summer Glau was pitted against Katrina Bowden
Analysis: This is a battle between Esquire Magazine's Sexiest Woman Alive and every Sci-Fi website's Sexiest Everything Ever. Glau's won both of her matchups by more than Bowden's won hers, though that could just be a function of the pairings.

Prediction: This is the Internet, not a magazine, so I'm guessing Glau.

Results : Summer Glau won with 82% of the votes.

On the final four, Summer Glau was pitted against Sarah Michelle Gellar

Prediction:  As much as it pains me to do so, I have to predict a Glau victory in this one. But I'm still pulling for Gellar, and still not above lobbying, should it become necessary

Results : Summer Glau won with 89% of the votes.

Alphas – Summer Glau character Skylar new infos

Alphas - Infos on Summer Glau's character, Skylar

Alphas Summer Glau

Exclusive report from an early screening of Alphas 1x07 Catch and Release; more infos about Alphas's guest star Summer Glau and her character named Skylar

Genre fans love Summer Glau. From her role as the enigmatic River in Firefly to the cold, but somehow compassionate Cameron in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles. But this Monday, August 22, we get to see her in one of her most exciting roles to date.

Summer appears as a rogue Alpha with a knack for making stuff out of anything at hand. A sort of super-MacGyver. But her stuff is much cooler than Richard Dean Anderson could ever imagine. And she has a past with Doctor Rosen’s team. Now she’s on the run, and it’s up to our team of Alpha heroes to bring her in.

Fans of Summer Glau will find this role, I believe, quite enjoyable. She’s not mentally unbalanced, coldly emotionless, one-dimensionally kick-ass, or even a psychotic genius this time. She’s just a brilliant and gifted woman on a mission. This episode is a roller-coaster ride from the start, so strap in and enjoy.
