Serenity premiered in France at the 31st Deauville Festival of American Film on September 3, 2005, in Deauville, France.
The Deauville Festival of American Film is a European showcase for mainly American movies; this is a very popular film festival in France (second only to Cannes!). It is a launching pad for both independent and studio movies in Europe.
Nathan Fillion and Summer Glau travelled to France representing Firefly's movie sequel. They took turn in sharing their pleasure to come and anecdotes on the movie in an interview with cinema website ecranlarge.com...at least for Nathan Fillion. Indeed, a defective dictaphone did not allow to reproduce the whole Summer Glau's interview, only a short text mixing evanescent memories and barely audible rushes, the following one (translated from French to English):
"Summer Glau's entire life was devoted to dance until she broke her toe. She keeps from these years of hard work as a prima ballerina many regrets, an intact but unsatisfied passion, and also booked behavior, if not antisocial [!!??]. To say that it was used to interpret the mysterious River, it just takes few steps that she will not cross. However, she recognizes that many girls lonely and uncomfortable in their skin will recognize themselves in River, and why not learn from her evolution throughout the film. Otherwise, she retains from her character the fear when reading the script. Indeed, second part in the series Firefly, she is thrown into the limelight with the film. River's role was physical, and Summer had to follow a daily workout with a coach, and she often met with Joss Whedon to fully understand all facets of River.
On a more personal side, she is very attached to his native Texas (without wearing any judgment on President Bush), and even more to her family. She spends her free time reading cookbooks and trying to cook, although she admits it is not won. Professionally, she has just finished filming another science fiction movie in Hungary [Mammoth (2006)], and continues to make appearances in TV series."
But at least we can enjoy lovely self taken shots of Nathan Fillion and Summer Glau during these interviews:

Members of the Serenity cast have been doing a free signing at HMV Princes Street in Edinburgh on August 24th, 2005. Summer Glau was there along with Nathan Fillion, Morena Baccarin, Adam Baldwin, Gina Torres and Joss Whedon himself.
A lucky fan was there and shared his Scottish adventure with other fans; those who will take the time to read his report, quoted from Firefly.net, will be rewarded with his photos with the cast:
Squeeeee. Wednesday August 24th, 2005. What a day.
You know, when my good mate Andy offered me two free tickets to go and see Serenity, I thought...WOW! I'm so lucky. That day is going to rock. Nothing could make it better.
Hehehe. If only I knew.
When I heard that a large chunk of the cast, including Summer Glau, we're going to be doing a free signing in Edinburgh that day in the exact place I was going to be...I...I could have died of happiness!
I could not BELIEVE it. And then when I read Joss Whedon was going??! Holy frikkin Yup, thats right... I said !
So, I had to re-schedule my train plans to make it to Edinburgh in time for this, so I left my house at 4.30 in the morning...and my train journey took 7 hours. But it was so worth it.
Okay...we were told that Nathan, Summer, Jewel, Morena, Adam & Joss would be there. I'd met them all before, except Joss of course, but I was so happy at the thought of seeing them again! Especially Summer!! On the train journey up there, I wrote her a 2-page letter...put it in an envelope on which I wrote "To the beutiful Miss Glau" on. And on the back, I put my address on, just incase she wanted to write back. It's probably unlikely she will though, as I didn't put a "self-addressed stamped envelope" in there, or any international return coupons, but hey, I can dream!
So I got there, and we found out that Jewel wasn't there...
But Gina was!
I was very pleased. Obviously I was sad at not getting to see Jewel...but I'd never met Gina before...and don't know if I'll ever get the chance to again!
I took my Firefly set with me to get it signed. I also took the group photo of the cast that had been signed by all of them except Gina & Sean. Just incase, as it was always uncertain about who was going to be there.
We found out we could only have one thing signed. I was kinda bummed, as I didn't know what to get Gina to sign! So I thought, well, I'll ask her to sign the photo, and everyone else to sign the boxset.
So, we got a little closer...and I caught little glimpses of Adam, and Nathan...Morena too.
And then...here comes the motherload, people. Through a gap in the crowd I saw Summer. And then, she looked over, and our eyes met.
I need to remember to breathe as I type this, cos reliving this moment makes me emotional!
Her face lit up right away, and she smiled and waved over at me and mouthed "Hi!". I was overcome with joy. Obviously I smiled and waved back too! Then I blew her a kiss...and she blew me one back! I couldn't believe it.
After that, I had tears in my eyes, I was so happy. I could have forgotten everything else and just gone home happy after that.
I was with my friend Jason, he's a big fan of Summer too, and had met her 3 times.
As we got closer, I could hear Gina laughing every now and then, she sounded so bubbly!
Then when me and Jason came to the front of the queue and we're waiting...Summer looked at us and then turned to Morena and said "My boys are here." I was so chuffed, and touched. The thought that she not only remembered us, but called us " her boys " warmed me through and through!
The event itself, was rather unorganised. Everybody was very rushed. There were lots of HMV security gaurds who were very pushy, and they we're quite rude to some people.
Anyway, then we got to speak to Adam. He didn't seem as cheery as he was the last time I met him, to be honest he looked quite tired...I think that with the premiere...and the flights, he must have been worn out! But he was nice, shook my hand, said hello, signed my set, and stood with me for a photo.
Then it was over to Summer & Morena. Wow! I said hi, and Morena said "Hey you! How are you doing?" So I'm guessing maybe she remembered me from the first con? Who knows! She was wearing a lovely gold outfit that looked companion-like! I told her that it looked lovely. I told Summer that I had written her a letter on the way up... and I gave it to her, she said "Aww, thank you very much." And I told her and Morena that I was going to see Serenity that night!! Summer was really pleased, as she knew I hadn't seen it yet. Morena asked if it was the first time I had seen it, and I said yes, and she said "Ah, wow, you're going to love it!" And then I asked if I could have a photo with them. And Morena said "Sure! Come round here." So I went round the other side of the table (And a few days after someone told me on a thread that all the security gaurds near him started freaking out when I did that.) and I got between the two of them, while Jason took the photo. But the flash didn't go off, so I ad to stay there...between the two of them, while he put the flash on and took another one. I'd like to point out that I started off evenly between Morena and Summer, and Summer leant in closer to me, so I did likewise! lol! As you would! Then I thanked them and was hussled on.
It was getting quite chaotic. I put my set and the photo down on the table, and it sorta got passed along. I didn't get much time to say anything other than hello to Joss...and I was to nervous to think of anything to say! He's god-like! I couldn't get a photo with him, but managed to snap one of him.
Then it was on to Nathan and Gina. Nathan looked really tired. He wasn't his usual fun self either! Bless him! Gina was lovely though.
I asked if I could have a photo with her. She said sure, so I crouched down next to her, and she asked Nathan to come in too, which was cool! A pic with the Cap'n n Zoe!!
Then I got up, and went to pick up my set, I saw that Gina had signed that instead, so I was like, ah thats cool! And I picked up the photo and Gina goes, "Oh, I think I missed that one." Then she took it and signed it for me! Which was so nice of her! I told her it was lovely to meet her and then we were hussled on.
It was lovely to meet Gina & Joss, and great to see the others again. Especially Summer!
And now PsychicRiver's pictures with the cast of Serenity (credit to Jason Bean):
A press junket was hosted by Universal on September 24th 2005 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills to promote the worldwide theatrical release of Serenity on September 30th 2005. There was three mini press conferences: the first one was a conversation with Joss Whedon himself. The second one was with Nathan Fillion, Gina Torres and Morena Baccarin. Next up was with Adam Baldwin, Summer Glau, Jewel Staite and Sean Maher (Ron Glass and Alan Tudyk didn’t make it).
Journalists had later the possibility to conduct one-one-one interviews. Don't miss the two videos interviews with Summer Glau and Sean Maher at the end of this Blogpost.
Here's the transcript of the bigger panel featuring cast members Adam Baldwin, Sean Maher, Summer Glau, and Jewel Staite, during which they spoke about coming back to replay their characters.
Summer, did your experience as a dancer help you with all of the fight scenes and the stunts you had to do?
Summer: It did help me, because I was used to the training every day, going to the gym and working out all day. Doing lots of different types of training. But really it’s completely different muscle memory. I had to completely retrain my body. It took three months, all day, every day.
Adam: And it worked!
Besides the quality, what was the biggest difference between doing Firefly the show and Serenity the movie?
Jewel: I think it was the time factor. We spent so much more time on the movie than on the series. We [could] do a three-page scene all day long if we wanted to, and that was nice.
[On the television show,] if we had … twelve hours, that was it, and in those twelve hours we had eight or nine pages to shoot. On the movie, I felt like we had this personal time, we could stop, we could talk about the characters, we could talk about the vibe of the scene, what we were going for…
Adam: We had two weeks of rehearsal before we started filming, and I think we focused a lot on the main dialogue scenes early on. But we also focused on that “mule chase” scene, because we had two weeks of exterior work on location that we had to get in [during] those two weeks to stay on budget and on time. The weather cooperated and we were able to get all that stuff in. … Once we got to the studio and the controlled atmosphere on the sound stages, we were home free. It felt like we were right back workshopping our little TV show on these gigantic Universal sound stages. It was just great.
Sean: I agree, the time was a big thing. We obviously had a lot more time to tell a story than we did we when we were doing the series. But to me it felt so similar to the show. Everything just felt a little more spectacular, a little grander. There was a wonderful feeling of redemption, because we’ve come back with these people, this great reunion, and there was a wonderful energy…
Jewel: …and a sort of closure too. Because when we got canceled, it all happened very quickly. I’m from Canada, I’m from Vancouver, so I packed up my stuff and went home, and I felt like there was no closure whatsoever. So when it was decided and we were green-lit to do the movie, and we saw each other again, and we were able to play these characters one more time, it felt nice… very gratifying.
Adam: An important aspect of that is that we felt, and I think the fan base felt, that [with the TV show] we were kinda under the gun from the get-go. Our ratings were low. Everyone knew our ratings were low. And we needed to figure out some way to push them up, and never did. We got canceled. But the cancellation all happened really quick. It was like, ‘Okay, you’re done, go home.’ But Joss immediately asked for the show and the rights to Firefly to make it somewhere else. They tried to sell it to other TV networks and they didn’t bite.
But over time he was able to get Universal and Mary Parent’s attention, and they agreed to make the film. But Joss never gave up. Joss never gave up quote/end-quote “fighting for the future.”
It was very hard for all of us and devastating emotionally. [turns to the other actors] I don’t know about you guys, but I never felt like Joss gave up. I never felt that this was where we would end up until Joss gave up and said, “I can’t do it anymore.” And he never did.
So, while we miss our show, you’re right that we have closure, whatever happens to the movie.

Customer Review (By Oxford42) :
The 2-in-1 cd pack includes Chronicles of Riddick and Serenity.
Chronicles of Riddick, the sequel to Pitchblack, is a Sci-Fi movie with a Mad Max feel. It is very different movie from the original, Riddick is of course, still Riddick: hard-edged and full of attitude. Chronicles Of Riddick takes place after Riddick's escape from the planet where Pitch Black takes place. It starts with his recapture after being in hiding for many years and propels us intot the futuristic universe of the story where a large sect of religious fanatics called Necromongers are taking over, moving from planet to planet, converting the willing to their faith and killing those who will not convert.
Necromongers are borg-like half-machine half-man beings from many different original planets. Unlike Borgs, they retain their individuality when they are converted. Riddick gets caught up with the Necromongers after he is taken to the prison planet of Crematoria. Crematoria is a sort of reverse to the world of Pitch Black. Here daylight, not nightfall, is the killer. Overall, this is a great movie for action fans.
In Serenity, Joss Whedon expands the Firefly Universe in the same way that his brilliantly unique series pushed the boundries of Television and Movies. This is a good sci-fi flick set in a world ruled by the "Alliance" (think the Imperials from Star Wars). The plot was well constructed, with a progressing storyline and characters who became more developed as the movie continued.
The crew of Serenity, also the name of their ship, are an eccentric mix of people including war veterans, a priest, a mercenary, a pilot, a mechanic, and a doctor and his strange sister who is being who are both wanted by the Alliance. When the crew learns of a secret Alliance project, they feel there is only one right thing to do, and at any cost. The genius that is Joss Whedon, created a thouroghly enjoyable movie that is watchable whether you are familiar with the show that spawned it or not.
Here's a detailed look at one of River's outfits from Serenity, currently on sale by PropStore. River wore this purple dress and net top when a heist went bad at the beginning of the movie. It's also the scene with the famous "I swallowed a bug" line.
River's dress consists of three pieces worn together as one outfit. The under dress is made of segments of tie-dyed material assembled in a patchwork design. The brown top is made of a spandex-blended fabric and has one long sleeve on the left arm. The mesh top features multicoloured netting throughout. A pair of black rubber goggles with glass lenses completes the lot.

River Tam’s (Summer Glau) Laboratory Costume used in the Joss Whedon cult sci-fi movie Serenity. This costume was used in the exciting opening scenes inside the Alliance Academy Facility when her brother Simon (Sean Maher) rescues her, and again (minus the collar) during a dream state she enters halfway through the movie into her childhood classroom.
The costume consists of a green ribbed unitard with rear zipper and marked “River”, complete with metal plates velcroed onto the hips and legs as well as circular metal hoops which held an apron across her front and back (sadly this is no longer present as the material rapidly deteriorated after production). Also included is a rubber collar which was placed around Rivers neck inside the laboratory, futuristically detailed and painted a dull silver to resemble metal, and fixes together with Velcro at the back, marked inside “River #2”. Also included is the costumers tag detailing its use in the movie and the elements included. It is in great condition but for some slight tarnishing to one of the metal plates which are some of the remains of the degraded apron. There are no sizes marked but approximately a size small.
Here's another series of pictures, some with the apron. The last two pictures shows River’s headset used by the Alliance to control River’s telepathy for their own use (Comes with two sheets of production concept designs, both A4 sized).

Serenity Fan Fest, hosted by Universal Studios Hollywood on September 24th, 2005, gave fans of Firefly and Serenity the opportunity to meet members of the cast and crew, view clips and behind-the-scenes footage from the film, meet the special effects team behind Serenity and also to see through their own eyes authentic movie props.
Find below rare HQ photos of the Serenity movie prop exhibits, taken by Browncoat David Mello, who gave us the permission to use his awesome photos for this blogpost. Outside of the Exhibit room, fans were greeted by the Mule itself, Serenity's own Work Horse; inside the room, they discovered a scale model of the 'reaverized' Serenity ship, props from inside the ship, weapons and other rarities like the Mirandamobile.
Roberta Schwartz was delighted to pose with the movie props, which means more awesome photos for our viewing pleasure :
UPDATE : here are more photos from Kevin Parry for WireImage; the photos includes the movie props and the Firefly cast & crew during the signing session as well. Fans will recognize Visual Effects Supervisor Loni Peristere, Adam Baldwin, executive producer Chris Buchanan, and actors Rafael Feldman and Yan Feldman.
Unfortunately, i don't think such an exhibit would be possible now, with all the movie props scattered to the four winds.
Firefly fans can watch the Mule at Universal Studios Hollywood theme park, though; here's the video :
I hope you enjoyed the tour!
