Joss Whedon Nominated Summer Glau for the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

POSTED BY chrisdvanne ON Aug 22, 2014 / 4 COMMENTS

Joss Whedon took up the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and then he challenged Summer Glau, Lin-Manuel Miranda and the entire British Royal Family, except Prince George because "Don't do that to a little baby, thats mean".

Watch Joss Whedon's awesome video below and learn more about the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and how it started.

And now I really want to see Summer do this!

Unless you’ve living under a rock you must have heard about the Ice Bucket Challenge to promote ALS. The likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Justin Bieber, Oprah Winfrey, Dick Costolo, Justin Timberlake, Jimmy Fallon, Chris Christie, Triple H and Martha Stewart have all participated in the challenge and asked fellow celebs to do the same. The ALS Foundation reports that it has raised $15.6 million since the challenge started.

So why are they doing it?

Well the challenge involves pouring a bucket a bucket of cold ice water over their heads to raise awareness and fight ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) or Lou Gehrig’s disease. The challenge is simple, pour ice-cold water over your head and then challenge someone else to do it. The person challenged has to do so within 24 hours or donate $100 to fight ALS. Even if a person completes the challenge, they’re welcome to donate the money.

What is ALS?

‘ALS is a disease of the nervous system that affects the motor neurons in the brain and the spinal cord,’ says Dr Sudhir Kumar, senior consultant neurologist, Institute of Neurosciences, Hyderabad. These motor neurons carry signals from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. ‘The disease is progressive in nature, which means once it starts it affects all body parts and ultimately causes complete loss of muscle movement and co-ordination. There is absolutely no hope of improvement in ALS and in the later stages the patient loses the ability to grab things, speak or even move any body part,’ he explains.

How did the challenge start?

The ALS Association credits Pete Frates, a former Boston College baseball player for making the challenge popular. He’s been living with the disease since 2012, and it has become a phenomenon since Frates took the challenge at the end of last month. .

Side note: Tony Toscano, who moderated Summer's Q&A panel at Fantasy Con 2014, also nominated Summer Glau for the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

The odds of seeing Summer Glau take up the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge are equivalent to those of seeing the Queen Elizabeth take a selfie with her family. Oh wait...

Side note: this photo was taken by spoof photographer Alison Jackson using lookalikes.

Actually I would not be so surprised if she both write a check and do the ice bucket thing.  wink

And I hope she nominates Thomas Dekker  tongue

I wondered when someone was going to nominate her. I agree that she'll donate and do the Ice Bucket challenge.

To be honest, I'm simply glad that Joss nominated Summer because it shows he has not forgotten her. I don't recall the two of them meet publicly or him mentioning her since they attended together the 2nd Annual Dizzy Feet Foundation's Dance Gala, LA on July 28, 2012.
