Summer Glau had to cancel her appearance at the Ottawa Comiccon this weekend 11-12 May due to "a personal emergency" in the words of the convention organizers, which turned out to be a simple passport loss.
Here's Ottawa Comiccon statement:
We just heard that unhappily a personal emergency keeps Summer Glau from appearing at Ottawa Comiccon this weekend. She apologizes profusely to her fans and supporters. For those who have bought a trio Firefly photo op with Nathan Fillion, Summer Glau and Jewel Staite, they can go to the photo op booth to exchange them for a duo photo op or a refund.
Summer Glau apologizes to her fans and supporters for not being able to make it to Ottawa Comiccon 2013 in a heartfelt video.
UPDATE: Summer was at Ottawa Comiccon 2014, check out the photos in the Gallery.
The good news is that Ottawa ComicCon organizers have invited her to their Montreal ComicCon, to be held on September 13-15, 2013. We will keep you informed as soon as Summer is added to the guest line-up for Montreal ComicCon.
UPDATE: Summer lost her passport and was not able to make it to 2013 Ottawa Comic Con, she was still able to join the Firefly panel via skype.

At least all fans are reassured by the explanation given by Summer in her apology video and there's nothing wrong going on.
Hopefully she can make it to the next Montreal ComicCon, taking place on September 13-15, as mentioned on the video.

I'm reassured its nothing serious. The message released for her cancellation could have been worded better. "Personal emergency" conveys something far worse than the actual event.
Summer sounded so sweet and so sad in her message, you wish you could say in person, "It's okay. These things happen. There will be another event." Because you feel like such an idiot saying it to your computer screen.

As an member of the European Community, I would have thought that a passport wasn't necessary to travel from the US to Canada. All the more the Canadian authorities knows Summer very well since she's been there many times, when attending conventions or when shooting a serie.

I must say I'm not familiar with the administrative specifics between The US and Canada. I guess Summer knows all that, and even mentioned she tried to get an emergency password without success.
As I told you, I'll stick to the explanation given on the video, I don't need another one.

I'm glad that it was nothing horrible like her health or a family related thing. I think anyone would've accepted a statement given from her but she actually took time out of her day and made a video for her fans which is to say the least is very appreciated by all. It does look like she was close to crying at the end but her fans will always forgive her.
