She said that she love going to conventions to meet the fans who make her work possible. The conventions are during the summer time when she is between projects, which gives a lot of publicity for her. A good publicity that might help her to get noticed by a potential employer, having a huge devoted fan base is very beneficial for her. Going to fan conventions is of course much better for her career than hanging at the beach all day.

A convention must be wearying for a guest; though Summer Glau participate to the Calgary Expo and a few days later to the Startfury T3 2011.
It's a good thing for her fans to be able to see her and prove their devotion but is it a good thing for Summer's carreer; i don't want Summer Glau's talent wasted. And i don't want her to spent the rest of her time going from one convention to another, capitalizing on her past glory as Firefly and TSCC star. I understand that actors have to pay the bills too but i think that Summer deserves better.
Going at convention is fun but i would prefer to see her on set rather than on stage. Summer is close to thirty and the Hollywood clock is running, especially for pretty actresses.

I learned very recently what an "photo op" was and i thought some of the wiki viewers might be in the same case :
From Wikipedia : A photo op, short for photograph opportunity (photo opportunity), is an opportunity to take a memorable and effective photograph of a politician, a celebrity, or a notable event. Among amateur photographers, the term is used to refer to any opportunity to take good photos.

From Calgary Expo : "Please note that Summer Glau's photo ops will happen at her booth, and you will not need to check in ahead of time! Please bring your own camera for this one!"
For the other guests photo ops, a professional event photographer is there and a special background is available. I cheked almost all guests and it seems that Summer and captain Kirk are the only ones with special treatment. The quality of the pose and the photos itself won't be the same for Summer Glau, although the price is still $40.
My guess is that this is a request from Summer herself (less tiredness or tight schedule maybe); or the organizer wants to save time and space for the two most demanded people.
