Back in 2006 a little known show called Heroes burst on to our TV screens and revolutionized the world of superhero/sci-fi series, drawing in its wake millions of fans around the world. Coincidentally, a sort of little known fact has emerged from the show itself, revealing a surprising connection between Heroes and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
And no, we’re not talking about the fact that a nineteen year old (at the time of the show) Thomas Dekker played the character of Zach, Claire’s (the cheerleader played by Hayden Panettiere) controversially gay or not best friend, for twelve episodes before leaving to take a starring role in Fox”s new show Terminator The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
The hidden gem we’re going to reveal to you is, as you must expect, about Summer Glau. Without further ado, here’s the little known fact that will blow your mind, at least we hope so: Summer Glau almost played Hiro’s love interest in NBC’s sci-fi drama Heroes.
And here’s the story behind this amazing tidbit that could have changed Summer’s career. In a 2008 interview for thestream.tv, writer and co-executive producer of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles Natalie Chaidez, who also worked as a co-executive producer on Heroes, was asked about the differencies and similarities between the two shows. She revealed that Summer was going to be playing the role of Charlie Andrews, the waitress who was Hiro”s love interest in the first season of Heroes.
Unfortunately the timing just did not work out for Summer Glau, so the part of Charlie Andrews was played by Jayma Mays, who is best known for playing Emma Pillsbury on the Fox musical series Glee.
Here’s an excerpt from Natalie Chaidez’s video interview in which she mentions the similarities between Heroes and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (Summer’s little known fact is at 1:32 of the video):
Such a shame for Summer Glau not getting the recurring role of Charlie Andrews. Never mind she picked up a better audition and was worth the weight in gold in playing that role of the irresistible Cameron Phillips in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, where she met up with Thomas Dekker and formed with him a solid bond, both on and off screen.
As Natalie Chaidez explains in the interview due to other work commitments, the timing just did not work out for Summer Glau. So as explained by all accounts she was in demand and approached for a part in Heroes. It was a very heartwarming interview from Natalie Chaidez regarding Summer Glau, she had the utmost respect for her as a person and also as such a talented actress.
So one would have to say the million dollar question is, would Summer”s career maybe gone down a different path, had she landed the role of Charlie Andrews in Heroes? I would probably have to incline to say yes, given the success of the show, especially in its first season. That said, Heroes loss was TSCC’s gain at the end of the day without a shadow of doubt.
Actually, had Summer landed the part in Heroes, we probably would not be speaking here today. Indeed, you probably know that the staff of the Summer Glau Wiki, namely Fermi, Charley_Dixon and chrisdvanne, come from the TSCC fandom. Or perhaps we would have seen Summer in another movie/TV show and we would have been thrilled by Summer’s performance, the same way we were in TSCC, who knows...
