Christmas has come early for Joss Whedon fans. All episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, and Firefly are available to binge on Facebook’s streaming platform Facebook Watch in the U.S., through a deal with 20th Century Fox Television.
Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played the titular heroine in Buffy, made a video announcement on her Facebook page about the show becoming available to stream.
Facebook Watch also published another video, promoting all three shows this time, with a wink at the trademark snappy dialogue in, like, everything Whedon writes.
The shows, which originally aired on TV around the turn of the millennium and will evoke nostalgia among older millennials, may reflect Watch's new strategy to focus on viewers in their 30s and older.
Facebook vice president of video Fidji Simo said in a blog post:
Our focus with Facebook Watch is on content and experiences that help people connect, ignite conversation and build community.
Fans also can use Facebook's "Watch Party" function, which allows friends to watch simultaneously and discuss it in live time. A watch party for a Buffy-thon was scheduled on Nov. 30 at 3 p.m. PT, followed by an Angel watch party on Dec. 1 at 12 p.m. PT, and one for Firefly on Dec. 2 at 12 p.m. PT — each through their respective series Facebook page.
All three series are also currently streaming on Hulu, which requires a subscription.
First launched in the U.S. in August 2017, Facebook Watch includes original series and other content, live sports, and programming produced by independent creators.
