R. Tam Sessions

The R. Tam sessions are a series of five short videos featuring Summer Glau as River Tam, released by Joss Whedon over the internet, which were set within his fictional Firefly universe. They chronicled several of the early in-universe interviews with the emotionally troubled Firefly character River Tam.
Although released unofficially, the videos were meant as a form of viral marketing for the 2005 film Serenity. The sessions were released on the internet between August 16 and September 5 of 2005.
Currently includes "Session 416, Second Excerpt," "Session 1 Excerpt," "Session 22 Excerpt," "Session 165," and "Session 416, First Excerpt." Clips appear in their order of release, suspected to be the intended viewing order.

Here is the concept for the River Tam sessions in chronological order.

R. Tam, Session 1 - Excerpt

The fans are introduced to a young girl named River. She is then going under interviewed by the same man who we saw in the opening seconds. The setting are apparently the same room . This clip takes place before the previous one as indicated by the numbering of the slide and interview takeing place and River's personality is bubbly and lively .The interviewer begins to question River about her own personal life, such as how her school is going, and then asks her if she would like to be interested in joining what is presumably "the Academy." This clip then establishes that River as being extremely intelligent, and then hints at her having extremely intuitive, or possibly psychic, powers.

R. Tam, Session 22 - Excerpt

In this session we see River is having second thoughts about that she is not having "the right subject" for the treatments being done to her. She then requests to be transfer back to a normal school, despite it being " the treatments beaing too slow for her." The video then quikly cuts to another conversation at the table . River says "it's the Pax" (a reference to events witch appeard in Serenity), and makes another non sequitur about another patient who yhen died on the table while the interviewer (apparently a doctor) was performing surgery which points toward her beaing abel to be a mind-reader as it was something she did not she could see and was not told but that the interviewer was aware of this power . She desires very much to see her brother plder brother (Simon) in person, but the interviewer denies this request, then suggesting that she write to him instead.

R. Tam, Session 165 - Excerpt

River is experienced a psychotic break down and then is pacing around instead of sitting down like in the previouse segementation. She is muttering (with the occasional stutter) how she apparently cut up her mattress for reasons beeing unknown to anyone else than herself, making a reference to the walt disney fairy tale The Princess and the Pea. She then claims that she has no "mission objectives ," apparently the only thing she is seeking is the main purpose to why she is at this institution and who sent her hear . Suddenly after a video cut, she shrieks and then slumps over on the tinterviewers able, and then claims that something in the mattress is witch is "annoying her" and then screams repeatedly at the interviewer that "they cut it out" (a reference to the Firefly episode "Ariel").

R. Tam, Session 416 - First Excerpt

In the second last excerpt River tam says that Dr. Mathias "gave [her] a priority ", and is apparently self aware that her plder brother Simon tam is infact looking for her as they speak . She says she cannot tell if the interviewer what this mission objective realy is, and that what she will have to write it down, reaching for the pen the interviewer is holding.

R. Tam, Session 416 - Second Excerpt ( The ultimate killing machine is born )

We see the interviewer sitting in a chair next to the table. After a few seconds of moments of silence, he puts his hands to his across his throat and begins to cough violently. We then see him pull out what is apparently a silver ink well pen, and throw it onto the metalic table. After a few moments of struggling, he then falls out of his chair onto the floor. With his blood on her hand, River then appears ondirectly on screen, looks directly at the into camera lens and them whispers, "I can see you".

Interviewer:
And you like school?

River:
I do. It's... Sometimes things move a little slowly for me.

Interviewer:
I imagine they do. What's your favorite subject?

River:
I'm finding physics a challenge.

Interviewer:
You're in the graduate program already.

River:
They call me "Little Mouse".

Interviewer:
Do you think they're jealous because you're so young?

River:
Volger is, a little. He plans to become very important.

Interviewer:
Did he tell you he was jealous?

River:
Oh, no. I just...

Interviewer:
You feel it.

Continued

River:
People tell you things all the time without talking. The way they move, the way they aren't talking.

Interviewer:
You're very intuitive.

River:
Simon says I was born with the third eye. He hates when I can tell which girls he likes.

Interviewer:
Your brother, he's a doctor, right?

River:
He's a trauma surgeon in Capital City.

Interviewer:
Quite a family.

River:
Simon's a genius. I could never do what he does.

Interviewer:
I think you could do whatever you put your mind to. That's what the Alliance needs. That's what this institute is all about. Your mind, letting it do everthing it could. Does that sound like something you'd be interested in?

River:
Would I still be allowed to dance?

Interviewer:
But you understand why these treatments are important?

River:
I don't think... I'm sorry. I think there's been an error. I don't think... I think I may not be the right subject for these... For this program.

Interviewer:
It's perfectly natural to feel a little nervous.

River:
I just... If it were possible to be transferred, I would make a... I would like to request a transfer.

Interviewer:
You want to be back in GenEd.

River:
Please.

Interviewer:
You told us that was no good for you, that it was too slow. That's why you're here

River:
Please. It hurts.

Interviewer:
Well, I can help you with that. You know how proud Dr. Mathias is of how you're progressing.

River:
I'm not progressing

River:
It's the Pax.
Interviewer:
Tell me what you see.
River:
You lost the first one. You cut too deep, he died on the table. One of your attendants cried and you comforted her. "We're doing such good work."

Interviewer:
Do you understand that that is true? Work we do here is very important, and you're a part of that.

River:
I would like to see my brother.

Interviewer:
Well, you can write to him anytime you like.

River:
I need to... I would like, please, to see him.

Interviewer:
Well, I'm sure he's very busy.

River:
Yes. Yes, I'm sure. (Static)

TITLE CARD: R. Tam Session 165 Excerpt

River:
I have a system. You make an assumption because you have a system. Your system. You're symptomatic. It's chronic. You think it's benign, but it has to be cut out. This system is simple. Blanket folded thus, the sheet pulled taut, the mattress. The mattress can't be trusted. It has to be gutted. I looked under 20 and found a pea, and you wonder why I'm not sleeping? Are you worried that I cut up my mattress for no reason, or that I had a perfectly good reason that you can't see? Can't see anyone. Even the orderlies wear masks.

Interviewer:
Why did you cut up your mattress?

River:
I am trying to protect my spine.

Interviewer:
Are you worried you might be injured? Your movement trainers have given you excellent...

River:
No one will give me a mission.

Interviewer:
A mission?

River:
I have a reason. I'm reasonable. I have a reason.

(Static)

River:
My movement hasn't been dictated yet, but I am not here for nothing. I am a... Sty. And you know I have a spine. There's something wrong with the body politic.

(Static)

River:
(SCREAMS) They're sticking in me. It's in the mattress and it's crawling inside me. You cut it out! You cut it out! You cut it out!

(Static)

TITLE CARD: R. Tam Session 416 First Excerpt

Interviewer:
You're very quiet today. How did your session with Dr. Mathias go?

River:
He gave me a mission.

Interviewer:
Really? Did he tell you your mission out loud, or did you just hear it?

River:
He plays hide and seek with me.

Interviewer:
Dr. Mathias?

River:
My brother. He's a doctor. He thinks he can find me, but I'm deep down and I do not make a sound.

Interviewer:
River, what mission did Dr. Mathias give you?

River:
I can't tell you.

Interviewer:
You can tell me anything. You know that.

River:
Can't tell. I'll have to write it down.
