Skylar (Summer Glau) was looking at a chip under her skin and her daughter Zoe goes "what is that, are you a terminator?"; watch it in this clip from the episode :
I talked about this TSCC shoutout with one of Alphas's writers, Robert Hewitt Wolfe.
Who got the brilliant idea to have Skyler's daughter ask "Are you a terminator?"
Robert Hewitt Wolfe : TV writing is so collaborative, ideas/lines/scenes come from the entire staff. It's often hard to remember who suggested what. I think it was me and Michael Karnow (the co-creator of Alphas).
While such nod to guest stars past work has proven propular with fans, i think such line can be distracting from the plot.
Robert Hewitt Wolfe : The trick is to make it a throw-away, place it so it doesn't derail things, and makes sense in context. But a good meta reference can be fun if done in moderation. I thought the TSCC one was well-played myself.
I personally liked it and i must say that this line generated lots of positive comments online when the episode aired live and even a few days later. Reviewers on tv specialised websites liked it too. And you, did you like it?
Robert Hewitt Wolfe is a writer and tv producer. Credits include Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Andromeda, The 4400, The Dresden Files, The Gates, and now Alphas!
Alphas episode 2.11 'If Memory Serves' was also filled with Terminator references, particularly the plot involving guest star Sean Astin and his 'caretaker'; read more about it in the Forum.
